How to Set Custom Notifications for your Favorite Contacts in WhatsApp for Android

WhatsApp is the world’s most used free messaging app and one of the reasons that make it so popular is the fact that it’s being frequently updated with new features. The most recent version for Android users brings a couple of updates, among which is the option to set custom notifications for your contacts. whatsapp custom notifications
The option to toggle the read status of chats was made available in an earlier build last month, but it’s now became available to all users. All you need to do is to long-press on a conversation in the Chats list to mark it as read or unread. Here’s how the entire changelog for the most recent version looks like:
  • Per chat custom notification settings and mute
  • Mark chats as unread or read
  • Added new emoji. You can also tap and hold on some emoji to choose a different color
  • When receiving a contact card, you can now quickly message or save the contact if they’re on WhatsApp
  • Lower the data usage used during WhatsApp calls in Settings > Chats and Calls
  • Language support for Urdu and Bengali
If you want to set different notifications for your contacts, such as a soothing ringtone for your special one or something more annoying for your boss, you can now do so inside the app. You just need to open up a conversation and tap View Contact, and you’ll see there new options for custom notifications. You can change the vibration alerts, lights, pop-ups and audio tones.
Furthermore, you can also mute conversations with individual contacts for preset periods, just like with group chats. The app has also been updated with skin tone variations for a few emojis. Also, the Chats and calls menu now have a new option which allows to reduce data usage when making calls.

Try these Dangerously Awesome Apps on Your Rooted Android Device

Surprisingly, a lot of people only root their phones just because everyone else is doing it. It shouldn’t surprise you that there are still a number of people out there who have no idea the possibilities that opens up to you when you choose to root your device.
Granted, you’re taking a risk and you’ve lost your warranty already but then, I see no reason why you shouldn’t make the risk you took worth it. The benefits of rooting goes beyond having SuperSU to grant root access to installed apps only, there are so many things you can do with your device only if you’re willing to explore.
Unless otherwise specified, the apps listed in this article can be dangerous and should be used with care. But hey, it’s fun exploring the deep world of Android OS if you know what I mean. :-)

Xposed Installer

This popular root app allows you to modify your device with different the different modules available in the repository. Xposed Installer itself is more like a framework and doesn’t add any special functionality until you install modules. I need to warn you though; you can brick your device by installing this software. It’s not for the faint-hearted.
xposed installer
Gravity Box is an Xposed Installer module that lets you customize almost everything about your UI. For instance, you can decide to use a background image for your notification center, change hardware key actions and many more.

System App Uninstaller

When your phone vendor installs bloatwares on your device, this is the right app you need to remove them. System App Uninstaller removes system apps that can’t be normally removed.
system app uninstaller

This app doesn’t only remove system apps, it also manages your apps. However, it is advised you shouldn’t just go about uninstalling all system apps unless you’re sure of what you’re doing.

Disk Digger

Disk Digger is a very useful app that lets your recover deleted files. It recovers deleted files right on your Android device even if you’ve formatted your SD card.
disk digger
You should note that the free version only recovers lost photos and MP4 videos, you need to install the pro version if you intend to recover other file types.

Pimp My ROM

This is another app that lets your further personalize your operating system and make things work just the way you want. rom simple tewaks like setting WiFi scan intervals to advanced ones like setting minimum & maximum CPU frequencies, Pimp My ROM is a root app any Android should try.
pimp my rom
There are apps and mods you can try out like the Sony BRAVIA Engine 2 and more. However, it’s advised you should use with caution as its still in Beta. Tampering with what you don’t understand may have negative consequences. Even the ones you’re sure of can send your phone into a bootloop.

Lucky Patcher

This is one of the first apps I normally install after rooting my device. For each app, you can open the patch menu and do a few things like removing license verification, removing ads, changing permissions and more.
lucky patcher
Some apps too also support the custom patches preloaded with your lucky patcher install.

ES File Explorer

ES File Explorer is more than just a file explorer, it has loads features and I think the name given to the app underestimates its capabilities. With root access, it can act a root explorer to access system files if you need to.
es file explorer
There are also other features you can use without rooting your device like transferring files over WiFi.

Freedom

Developers need to make money to continue creating awesome apps for us. I do not support cracking in anyway. However, this app tends to bypass in-app purchases.

iFont

Just as the name suggests, this app changes the font on your device. There are different fonts to chose from. This does not necessarily need root access on some devices like Samsung, Xiaomi and Huawei but you won’t be able to use it without root access on other devices like HTC and Sony.

Greenify

As you use your device and install applications, it gets slower overtime and starts lagging. This is due to some of your installed apps always running in the backround. With Greenify, you can hibernate these applications and speed up your device.
It’s not really a root app anymore though, but there’s a mode that needs Xposed Framework to function.

ROM Toolbox Pro

This is the all-powerful root app if you love installing custom ROMs and modifying what you already have.
ROM Toolbox Pro combines the best features from apps like Titanium Backup, ROM Manager, Root Explorer, SetCPU, MetaMorph, Autorun Manager and others. It’s a paid software though.

Google’s YouTube Gaming Streaming Site to Take on Amazon’s Twitch.tv, Starting Tomorrow

YouTube Gaming is all set to go public starting tomorrow and users can directly access the services by pointing their browsers to http://gaming.youtube.com. Users can check out who all are streaming and they can also start a stream by themselves. Coincidentally, this move comes exactly after one year after Google sold its Twitch.tv to Amazon. As of now, the site still asks for your e-mail and region thus promising a timely update once the service is launched in your country.
Youtube_Gaming
The best part of YouTube Gaming is that the streams will be categorized under a gaming title which will allow ardent gamers to check out new and hidden content in the games. We hope that YouTube will convert the stream to a traditional video once it is over, this will help it create a rather huge repositories of Gaming content.
The beta version of the streaming dashboard will be launching tomorrow and the service is devoid of any scheduling thus allowing streamers to stream it whenever they want to. In essence the entire Streaming is more of an impromptu event rendering a greater degree of freedom to the streamers. YouTube Gaming will be implemented on HTML 5 and it allows streamers to enable a “DVR Mode” that lets users stream the last four hours of the video and acts like a rewind button, quite literally.
Google commenting on the availability said that the gaming should work “in any country where YouTube is available.”  The app will be available on both iOS and Android from tomorrow. Twitch.tv will be Youtube Gaming biggest rival and the fact that gamers still use YouTube as their repositories for gameplays will be the biggest plus point.
As obvious as it might seem, the streaming service will create an auxiliary revenue stream for the company. Gameplays play a very important role in the gaming ecosystem and these videos act as the virtual guide for gamers stuck on a particular level, alternatively the videos also contain a live commentary adding an added layer of personalisation.

Office 2016’s Release Date is Reportedly Set for September 22nd

The current desktop version for Windows users is Office 2013, which has been released in October 2012. And now it seems that Microsoft is ready to release the final version of Office 2016 for Windows users, after it has pushed live the preview for Mac users last month.
office 2016 release date
German website WinFuture reports that Office 2016 for Windows users is set for a release on September 22nd for home and professional users. Probably Microsoft tried hard to make Office 2016 available in the same time as Windows 10, but it seems that there was still work to be done in development.
The final version for desktop Windows users is said to come with theme that’s identical to the latest Mac, iOS, and Android apps. Microsoft is looking to make the user experience as similar as possible across all platforms, so it’s going to look quite familiar with the Windows 10 touch-optimized versions of Office, as well.
According to internal documents obtained by WinFuture.de, Microsoft is already preparing the staff for the event. Here’s how the internal memo sounds like:

On September 22, 2015, we’ll release Office 2016 — with updates for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Skype for Business, Project, Visio, Access, and Publisher. The innovation wave continues in Q2 with the release of E5 and Skype for Business, and on-premise servers will follow. This is the central hub for all Office 2016 Commercial readiness, training, and marketing materials. Mark this page and check back frequently, as we will be releasing new materials, weekly, to support the launch.
Office 2015 also comes with a dark theme and brings a number of improvements, such as upgrade Outlook 2016 search, attachments, storage footprint, email delivery performance, alongside some improvements to image insertion in Word 2016 and Excel 2016. The Word app has been updated with real-time co-authoring within the desktop version of Office 2016, as well.

Hackers can steal your Gmail login from your refrigerator

Samsung smart fridge
One of the more seemingly pointless but totally awesome gadgets you can get for your home is a smart fridge. Not everything needs to be “smart,” but that lack of necessity won’t stop progress. Though all you really need from your fridge is to keep your turkey pastrami cool and preserved, it’s admittedly useful being able to tune into your favorite Pandora station, and fun drawing hilarious pictures on the little notepad app for your family to come home and find later in the day. While the smart applications of a refrigerator may seem a bit innocuous, what isn’t harmless is that researchers recently discovered that your Gmail login can be easily hacked out of your fridge.
As part of the recent DEF CON hacking conference, a group of refrigerator hooligans (a research group called Pen Test Partners)found a man-in-the-middle vulnerability that allowed them to extract Google login credentials from the refrigerator when it attempts to update its Google Calendar app. The hack is a result of the fridge not checking proper security credentials on one end of the data transaction. When the refrigerator begins the process of updating Google Calendar with a user’s current schedule, it provides its own security authentication, but doesn’t check if the recipient of the data transaction — what is supposed to be Google’s Calendar — has proper security credentials. So, if hackers can pose as Google Calendar, the fridge will just hand over the data, which includes whatever Google login is tied to the calendar.
The model of the vulnerable refrigerator is RF28HMELBSR, which will set you back a cool $3,599, and possibly whatever sensitive information can be accessed from the Google account you end up linking to it. At the moment, Samsung is looking into the matter, so if you really need to raise the intelligence of your fridge, you at least might want to avoid giving it your Google info until Samsung issues a patch to plug up the hole.

Vysor puts your Android device in a desktop browser window

vysor-app
It’s been more than a year since Koushik Dutta parted ways with the Cyanogen team. He’s been keeping busy, though, and has a new app that makes it easy to control your Android device from the comfort of a desktop PC.
Koush’s app is called Vysor, and it’s refreshingly simple to get running. You’ll first need to grab the Chrome extension from the Chrome Web Store. Once that’s done, just plug your phone in to a USB port, launch ADB on your PC, and then click the extension in Chrome. It’ll connect to your phone automatically.
There are already plenty of ways to take control an Android device from your PC’s desktop, of course. Samsung users can fire up the SideSync. Anyone with a rooted device can use AirMirror, and there are also apps like Teamviewer that provide remote access.
What makes Vysor interesting, though, is that it doesn’t just let you control your phone or tablet from inside a Chrome window. It’s that you can also share access to a device with anyone else who’s running the Vysor app. That means you can use it to remotely troubleshoot your mom’s phone instead of having to talk her through the process blind — or to support clients and co-workers.
Koush calls this feature Vysor Share, and he looks at it as a way to simplify the application testing process. Next up is Vysor Server, which will allow Koush (and other developers and dev teams) to access numerous test devices without having to physically pass them around. The devices — and devs — can be located anywhere in the world and shared as easily as pasting a link into a Hangouts window

Wilyfox is the Latest Smartphone Maker to hop on the Cyanogen Bandwagon

It’s a well known secret that the smartphone market has been deluged with several new entrants recently that struggle to make a space for themselves in the crowded market. While on one side we can quote success stories of companies like Xiaomi and OnePlus, on the other lies a graveyard of phones from manufacturers who simply couldn’t make a dent in the market.
Wileyfox_Swift
Wileyfox is the latest smartphone in the market to join the Cyanogen bandwagon and as with most of the Cyanogen powered phones, it promises to offer a bang for the buck. Wileyfox devices will be running the Cyanogen OS 12.1 which is based on Android Lollipop. Zuk Z1 is another Cyanogen powered phone which created quiet a stir once it was released this month.
Wileyfox has introduced two new phones, the 5-inch Swift and the 5.5-inch Storm. The smaller screened Swift is expected to cost nearly $200 and the Storm will retail at about $315. Pre-orders for the both Wileyfox devices will start from this week and the phones will be delivered only in October. The sales will be conducted across Europe, Africa and the Middle East and if you reside in US or Australia you may have to wait till the company is clear with its launch plans in your regions.
The Wileyfox Storm touts a octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor as opposed to the smaller quad-core 1.2GHz  Snapdragon 410 chipset in the Swift. Both the devices offer dual SIM slot and boast of expandable memory. While both these phones won’t be a literal alternative to the OnePlus Two, they are indeed priced aggressively.

The Wileyfox Swift is more of an entry level device and apart from the Snapdragon 615 it does come with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory (expandable up to 32GB) and a 13-Megapixel primary camera sensor coupled with a 5-Megapixel secondary sensor.
As we explained earlier, Wileyfox Storm is more of a top whack mid-range phone thanks to the Snapdragon 615 paired to a 3GB of RAM. The Storm offers a 32GB of internal memory along with an expandable memory card slot that can accommodate a whopping 128GB. In comparison with the Swift it has a bumped up camera duo in the form of a 20-Megapixel primary sensor and a 8-Megapixel secondary sensor.

Cortana Available on Android as a Public Beta, Provides an Alternative to Google Now

Microsoft had announced a few months back that they will be launching Cortana, the Windows based personal digital-assistant for Android and iOS devices. The company finally announced that Cortana app public beta will be available for Android starting today.
Cortana_Android
I have been using Cortana ever since it was released and it has been a neat experience till date. The digital assistant is intuitive and it has started to blend with most of the third party Windows app as of now. Microsoft seems to be hugely backing on the Cortana and trying to develop it as a standalone application across various platforms, just like how it did with Here Maps, which was initially a Windows exclusive feature.
Microsoft recently imbibed Cortana in Windows 10 and although i was not so inclined in using a Personal Assistant on a desktop, things have been shaping up well. Setting up reminders, searching web-on-the-go, and real time tracking of important information including flight details and task management.
That being said, some of the features like toggling settings and waking up the app by saying “Hey Cortana” are still exclusive to the Windows family. Since it is still in beta it would be safe for us to expect new features and an increased level of stability in the upcoming releases.
Microsoft seems to be keen on replacing Google Now as the default search tool in Android or at least give users a chance to choose between the two.
The very fact that Microsoft allows you to open Cortana by touch of the home key is a clear cut indicator that the Redmond giant wants to openly go loggerheads with Google Now. We are yet to ascertain how well the Cortana will blend its support for third party apps, we tried using Cortana for driving directions with Google Maps and it worked well but it couldn’t carry out commands involving any third party apps.
As of now Cortana is available for Android only for the U.S markets and Microsoft is planning to roll it out to other markets soon. However users outside U.S can also give the Cortana a spin by downloading the apk file from here.

How to Save a Bricked iOS Device

Bricking an iOS device, be it the latest iPhone, iPad or one of the first iPod Touch generations, is not as severe as it sounds. In most cases, the Apple device isn’t actually bricked and restoration can be done without much fuss. Of course, sometimes bad things happen and there is not much that you can do, but we’ve gathered  the most helpful answers on the subject and we are going to present the best tactics that one can apply on a bricked iOS device.
While most of these methods will run the Apple device through somewhat standard tactics for a person more than familiarized with iOS gadgets, some of them will seem quite simple and even stupid to do when you are holding an apparently useless, but quite expensive brick. Remember, at all times, that panic is the worst enemy here.
Bricked iPhone

How can bricked iOS devices be fixed ?

Unlike Google’s Android, where users have the ability of tweaking the operating system in manners more complicated and most of all, much accessible to someone reading a hacking blog, Apple has developed iOS as a robust and steady platform. Thus, regular users can only affect the stability of the system by jailbreaking through an unorthodox method or, and this is the most encountered case of them all, by interrupting a firmware update.
Here are the most encountered symptoms of a bad functioning Apple gadget:
  • The system is stuck on a black screen
  • The screen is showing a battery logo with a red line, but the phone is completely charged
  • Apple’s logo is present on the panel for a brief moment and the device goes blank intermittently
  • You have a spinning wheel stuck on the display
  • The device cannot start at all
In other words, if the phone has not stopped while installing a newer version of iOS because of insufficient battery juice or God knows what other factors, chances are that the device is not actually bricked. For that and even more, you will have to follow the guidelines below, after making sure that the handheld has not run out of battery (plug it and let it charge for ten minutes).

A simple Reset can cure it

iPhone reset
Location of the Power and Home buttons
This simple procedure can get most headaches out of the way, especially for those that are currently experiencing a spinning wheel on the display that doesn’t seem to stop this century, those that have an Apple logo stuck on the screen and in some cases, for devices that cannot power ON any more.
Here’s what you need to do:
  1. Press and hold the Home button (bottom-center) and thePower button (on top) until the Apple logo appears – or at least twelve seconds.
  2. Release both buttons at the same time.
  3. Wait until the menu screen loads and that’s it.
If the iOS device is still unresponsive after these steps, try repeating them while the iPhone, iPad or the iPod Touch is plugged into a charger.

Restoring: brutal, but effective

The most common way of curing bricked devices is sadly, brutal. By restoring an Apple device you will have to use a previously saved back-up of your files or, in case you have no such thing, start from a new, untouched iOS version – meaning precious data like settings, background, etc. will be wiped clean off.
Another catch of this process may sadden jailbreakers, as Apple has the habit of restoring to the latest edition of iOS, one that cannot be yet jailbroken. Luckily, there are several sources on which you can find direct links towards every iOS version pushed by Apple, links which can be then used for restoration.
A way out for jailbreakers would be to cook a Custom Firmware for the iDevice using tools such as Sn0wBreeze (for Windows) and PwnageTool (for Mac OS X), which is an iOS version already jailbroken that can be used successfully.
Now here’s how to restore an Apple gadget:
  1. Make sure you have iTunes installed and updated.
  2. Using the USB cord, connect the device to a computer.
  3. Open iTunes and select the product from the left column.
  4. Go to the Summary section and click on the Restore button.
  5. Wait for iTunes to download the latest iOS and then choose a back-up to restore from or, a new version if you have none.
  6. Wait for the device to sync ( from case to case, it can take a while).

Getting into Recovery Mode

iPhone Recovery
A simple restoration may not do the trick, while the Apple product is connected straight to a computer, like above. For those who followed our steps and nothing happened, a trick is to get the iPhone into recovery mode and then restore. Here’s what needs to be done:
  1. Make sure the device is OFF.
  2. Hold down the Home and Power buttons.
  3. Release the Power button and connect the product to a computer, while keeping the Home button pressed.
  4. When a screen of the iTunes icon and of a USB cable appear, like above, release the Home button.
  5. Restore using the steps mentioned above.

When Recovery fails, DFU may not

DFU_ModeDFU mode is a sort of advanced instance of the device loader, used by Apple to initially load up firmware and other sorts of sensible files. This mode has no secure protection and unlike Recovery, inexperienced users may flash the wrong firmware or actually screw the bootloader, especially if you are jailbreaking. So, make sure you are careful while this mode is activated.
  1. Power ON the device.
  2. Start iTunes and connect the gadget using the USB cord.
  3. Hold the Home and Power buttons pressed for exactly 10 seconds (measure it with a watch) and then release Power.
  4. Continue holding the Home button until iTunes detects a device in recovery mode.
  5. Restore.
Note: While in DFU mode, the screen of the Apple device will remain black, unlike in Recovery – that’s why, if those ten seconds have passed, the Apple logo will appear and you have to repeat the steps once again. When all of these fail, you can try to restore using another computer or, play dumb at the Apple store.

Into the World of Chinese Phones: Where to Buy, How to Import & More

Chinese phones?! Ugh! Sounds cheap right? No not anymore. We are much beyond those days where Chinese phones were designated as cheap and bad quality products. With top multinational companies like Xiaomi, Gionee, OPPO, OnePlus and many other companies from China entering the Indian market, they have revolutionized the Indian mobile scenario. Value for Money and Online exclusivity are the new mantra of the mobile world. With the likes of established players of the Indian mobile market – namely YU (Micromax spinoff), Karbonn, Intex – rushing for cover to launch their online exclusive product, the dimensions of the mobile market has just revolutionised in the past year!
china-phones-import
With modern manufacturing prowess with the likes of Foxconn, and the growth of top Chinese OEMS based in and around Shenzhen the Chinese tech market is blooming. In fact many of these companies are struggling to meet the demand! There may be many companies you have heard of before and many you haven’t. Either ways we are going to provide you a detailed perspective on the top wonder phones that have taken the world by storm or the way to import them to India. Sit back and buckle your seatbelts as we go on a long journey to the world of Chinese tech!

Why China?

  • Value for Money. The cost to power ratio is the top most selling factor of most Chinese tech. But how do they keep cost low when other big established players namely Samsung, Apple, Nokia fail / not intend to do so?
  • Top notch manufacturing plants using the latest tech. All made possible due to bulk manufacturers like Foxconn.
  • Huge R&D experience of many Chinese players namely Gionee, Ecoo. Oppo having done R&D for Samsung, Apple and many other before becoming launching their own brands.
  • With the recent boom in the Chinese microchip industry with the quality chipsets introduced by Mediatek in 2014 have taken the world by storm. Established players like Qualcomm and Broadcom have been put in a stiff! One can easily say 2015 is the worst year by far for Qualcomm. With their own chips suffering due to multitude of heating issues, the timing of launch of compatibly low cost, powerful MT67XX generation couldn’t have been worse for them. Qualcomm’s loss is China’s gain because manyChinese companies have MoUs with Mediatek for providing them Chipset at subsidised costs.
  • Various resellers selling Chinese phones globally (obviously charging a little premium over the selling price of the phones) via top notch couriers like DHL, FedEx. They also have warehouses in various locations in Europe and South Asia from where they ship the products. Payments are secure and done through PayPal mainly.  We will provide a list of top resellers which you can check out if you want to import something from them.

How do these top Chinese companies keep the cost the phones down?

Are Chinese phones compromising on quality of other flagship models in order to keep costs down?
But do really flagships of top companies like Apple, Samsung, and Sony et al really cost so atrociously high? That’s the basic question that will help you find the answer to the above mentioned question. No they don’t!
Consider a 2015 flagship cost about $700 (approx. 44,000 INR/4,400 Yuan). This is generally the average selling price of most flagships that are launched initially. Out of this, the production cost of the smartphone is actually 20-25% of the real production cost, another 30-35% goes for marketing (a whopping amount by any sense of imagination), 20-25% are eaten up by the distributors, local retailers, transportation and distribution and ultimately the company bags its one share of 20-25% profits. Remember this is a general estimate and it varies from brand to brand.

The Chinese brands has an edge over their competition over here which helps them to keep the cost down. Cost of marketing is almost negated as they take up Social media, Fan forums and Contests to build a strong fan base pre-launch. Their take on online exclusivity as the modern sales model has also reduced the middle man profits to a huge extent. Finally, they keep a lower share of profit on each phone – about 10% instead of 20-25%. They rely on the mantra of selling in bulks to generate the same amount of profits which other global leader try to generate in a lower no of sale.
Secondly they have a different approach to the production of their smartphones too. On contrary to big manufactures like Samsung, Sony who believe in manufacturing phones in bulk i.e. in few billions, most if not all Chinese companies believe in manufacturing depending on the market demand. They manufacture few millions of each phone model in each round. And this has led to the advent of flash sales where anywhere between 20 thousand to 100 thousand phones are sold in a go. This form of manufacturing helps them to keep the cost down too.

Once you manufacture a few billion phones in bulk, you would need to pay the present market rate for peripherals i.e. the SoCs, RAM, Camera modules, Sensors et al but when you are manufacturing in batches, you pay the prevalent market price depending on the market rate. We all know how prices of electronic goods come down with time. And this is where their strategy works. For example, when Xiaomi introduced Mi4 in 2014, the Snapdragon 801 was the leading SoC in the market but now in 2015, Mi4 is still selling like hot cakes and the top of the range 801 SoC has been replaced by Snapdragon 808/810. Hence their price has also slashed down by a big margin and thus Xiaomi starts making more profit. Pretty much the same with OnePlus One and other Chinese phones. Initially the profit is low and with time margins increase in spite of keeping costs low to the consumers.

Can you name a few top Chinese companies whom I can trust?

I want to buy one of their phones! But how to go about it?

In order to buy, you have to drop onto one of these Chinese reseller websites like Merimobiles, PandaWill and place the order. But is it that simple? No. If it had been so, we wouldn’t have been penning this down for you.
Here are some of the top Chinese resellers below:
  • Merimobiles.com
  • Wapmart.com
  • PandaWill.com
  • Tangworld.com(Xiaomiworld.com)
  • Gearbest.com
  • Coolicool.com
  • Antelife.com
  • Honorbuy.com (formerly Xiaomishop.com)
  • Aliexpress.com
  • Geekbuying.com
If you think there’s a website we missed out kindly name it in the comment section below sharing your buying experience with the site. We will definitely add it to our list later.
Once you have selected the phone you want, and also found out the cheapest option at one of the resellers mentioned above, you think your job is done and the phone is damn cheap! But before you bring out the calculators and change the USD into your own currency and start celebrating seeing the price, you must stop right away! This isn’t the price you are going to pay. There will be a whole lot of price additions to one you see now. Let’s see what all are there:
  • Shipping cost: In most of the websites, you will get two options. One option is Post and that’s the cheapest (but which we wouldn’t recommend – stay tuned to find out) and the other one is shipping via top courier companies. The shipping cost will albeit vary from country to country. On an average, it is in between $20 to $60. Shipping to India will cost around $20-$30 if you are shipping through DHL, FedEx.
  • Currency conversion rate: First of all you need to have a credit card for shopping with any one of these Chinese resellers. All the websites mentioned above support secure payment via PayPal. But since you are paying using a different currency than what is used in China i.e. Yuan Renminbi, you need to pay a separate conversion rate. PayPal provides the option to handle the currency conversion on your behalf and for that they charge about 4.5%. Your credit card company might be charging lesser. In that case you can choose to pay in the currency seller ask while paying via PayPal.
  • Import Duty: Import duty (or VAT in Europe) is the most unpredictable among all the added costs! Technically, the import duties on smartphones is around 6% in India and most other things (including tablets) is around 28%. But sadly, no one ever knows exactly how much the import duty you might need to pay. At least I haven’t been able to figure out exactly how does the Custom official charge import duties on products. It depends on your luck! But the few important points that they see are as follows:
    1. The cost of the electronic gadgets that is passing through the customs. If it’s a flagship device which you are importing then you would need to pay a higher custom duty as compared to a budget device. Generally the custom charges about $20-50 (approx. 1200-3000 INR) for flagship devices.
    2. If you are importing a phone which is high on demand, the customs might charge you more. Thus if you are importing something like Xiaomi Mi Note the customs will end up charging you higher.
    3. Customs duty also varies depending on the brand of the device your are importing. Maybe they will charge you more for a HTC or Xiaomi device than for an Elephone device.
But coming to the point, the customs duty is the primary reason why we would recommend FedEx, DHL over Postal service. DHL, FedEx provides an option for clearing the customs for you on your behalf and you need to pay the courier guy the custom charges when you receive the product. On the contrary, Postal service doesn’t handle customs for you. In case you are importing a device from China, the China Post will drop the package to the Customs office on the border. Then the customs department sends you a letter (mind it, they sent it via post) confirming receiving a device and informing you that it is sitting with them for Customs duty. Depending upon, where you are from, you either have to visit the customs office or have to write a letter to them confirming the order and asking them to clear the customs. So you can easily understand this is a long process! The package ends up spending few weeks or so in the Customs office. This is the second reason why we don’t recommend Postal Service. FedEx or DHL delivers the package to your within 3-4 weeks and you don’t have to tackle all the hassles of customs! Of course, the experience with DHL/FedEx hasn’t been flawless, but it’s still much better than the Postal service.
So finally you end up paying about an $80-$100 more over the price that you saw on the website.

I’m done with importing and stuff? But what about warranty?

In most cases, you won’t be getting the company warranty, because most Chinese companies provide country specific warranty i.e. for China only. But there is a way out, albeit a tough one. For warranty issues, you would need to ship the product back to the resellers from where you had bought and they will handle the rest. Mind that you will need to pay the shipment charges back to your resellers in China, but most resellers don’t charge for the return shipment though. Check with the reseller you purchased from for more details.
There are a few companies like Meizu, IUNI to name a few who provide international warranty and you would need to ship the product back to the company directly without going through the resellers. This will fasten up the whole process. But honestly speaking, you won’t need to worry about warranty issues! How many times have dropped down to a service centre for warranty issues in the recent past? It generally happens these days due to the multiple rounds of checking that each device goes through. But if you’re someone who worry a lot about warranty, the whole process is just not for you.

Conclusion

In spite of all the hassles and extra charges associated with importing a device from China is still not a bad option. In fact, it’s a great one if you don’t have many choices of the device which you are looking for in the same price range in your country. So go ahead and make you first attempt at buying a phone from China.
